Wynfield Hounds

About Us...

We live in Woodburn, Oregon, in the beautiful Willamette Valley.  Close enough to Portland to have all
the convenience of the big city, but far enough away to avoid all the hassles!

We started in the dog world by adopting a 6 month old Beagle puppy from the Humane society in the summer of 1994.  Beau was a great dog.  A typical Beagle to be sure, intelligent, stubborn, and cute as can be.  One did not turn out to be enough and about 10 months later, we adopted a second Beagle. Pippi was two years old at the time and very quickly took over the household!  She ruled the roost with her little iron paw her whole life. Through Beau, Ellen discovered the world of competition obedience and began working towards a title.  Through the obedience world, we also learned about the conformation world and the dog show 'bug' bit us and we started thinking about getting a dog we could show.

At the same time, Doug thought about getting a larger dog. We considered Boxers, and looked at English Foxhounds. Then, through a little research, Ellen found Harriers as a possible breed. She had a few email conversations with a breeder in California, and then traveled to Las Vegas where there was a Supported Entry in Harriers, and was introduced to a number of Harriers. Ellen came back and told Doug that this was the breed we were getting next. She was right, of course.

Merry, U-CD Multi HIT Am/Can/Int CH Kingsbury's True Grit CGC, NA, NAJ, CD was born in 1996. Because of so few litters in Harriers, it took about a year before we got our first Harrier. Merry was definitely a good introduction to the breed! 18 months later, we welcomed our second Harrier, Folly, to the household and soon more arrived and in 2001 we bred our first litter. As of March 2008, 10 Wynfield-bred Harriers from 4 litters have become conformation champions. We have put both obedience and agility titles on some of our hounds and we continue to train several of our hounds in both.

We love to live with beautiful Harriers and we do enjoy showing in the conformation ring. We are very proud of our hounds, the owners of Wynfield Harriers and their accomplishments together as you can see on our Wynfield News page. That said, campaigning dogs in the show ring is not that important to us.  Our focus remains on breeding beautiful, healthy dogs with sound temperaments and bodies that enables them to do all an owner asks of them, whether that be the show ring, the performance rings, search and rescue or most importantly, a stable, happy family companion.

Doug and Ellen are members of the Harrier Club of America, the Columbia-Willamette Beagle Club, the National Beagle Club, the Luckiamute Dog Training Club, and the Columbia Agility Team.

We believe in educating ourselves as much as we can about all aspects of the dog world.  We are active in several clubs and attend as many educational seminars as we can.  We do our best to be responsible, ethical breeders and we feel our primary responsibility is to the hounds themselves.  It is our job to do the very best we can by the hounds that live with us and those that we produce.  We believe that our job is to protect and preserve both Harriers and Beagles so that they may be enjoyed for generations to come.
